The Boreal Herbal

Book - The Boreal HerbalYour new favourite herbal book!

Why will The Boreal Herbal be your favourite? It’s packed full of so much easy, useable information!

I just love thumbing through it and looking at all the colour photographs of the plants and the things you can do with them.

If you’re just starting out in using herbs then this has a lot of information that you will find helpful and do-able. It’s not a book that just says, this plant is good for this or that. This book takes you through the how. With tips on harvesting, storage, preservation of wild plants, your , how to make herbal medicines, and how to use wild plants for cooking.

Fifty three different plants, nearly all of which grow here in Alberta, are covered in this book.

Decoctions, salves, teas… oh my! And then there’s the food recipes, such as Dandelion-Petal Cake, smoothies, soups… Oh dear! I think I just drooled on the keyboard.

Even the back, the part where so many people don’t look, is full of useful .things. Like “Botany Basics”, “Herbal Usage Chart”, “Medicinal Actions Chart”, and a “Vitamin Chart”.

If you don’t have this book already, you want it!

You can get it here.

hi, I am in your area, I struggle with recognizing the herbs. The pics in the boreal book or the internet, doesn’t give me much confidence. Could you give any suggestions, I want to learn to recognize herbs in our area like sheep sorrel, burdock and find slippery elm, thank you for your consideration and time, belinda

Hmmm. Good question. It can be difficult to be sure of the herbs, especially if you’re not used to them yet. In my experience it’s always been best to have someone show you in person the different herbs. We could make arrangements to show you and a small group around next growing season.

However, you may find these books very helpful as well:

Or, if you aren’t scared of proper botanical terms, this book Flora of Alberta is very accurate. However, it is very technical and doesn’t have pictures.
