Also known as Piper methysticum. The scientific name comes from Piper, which is Latin for “pepper”; and methysticum, meaning “intoxicating”. It is also called Ava, Yaqona, or Sakau.
The root of Kava is traditionally used among the peoples of the Pacific Islands, such as Hawaii, Melanesia, and Vanuatu, in the form of a specially prepared drink. It was used in ceremony and to provide mental clarity or insight.
